Mark Bower is ready to pledge his future to City for four more years.

The centre half, pictured, who has been outstanding this season, is on the verge of agreeing a new contract to remain at Valley Parade.

It is understood he has agreed in principle to the deal, which could be signed as early as today.

The news will come as a major lift to Colin Todd's side, who feared Bower's form would alert rivals.

"I've always wanted to stay at the club," said the Bradford-born defender.

"There was no decision to make about the new contract.

"It's virtually all been done and I don't think there is too much to be sorted out.

"These things can drag on and I know a few others are talking with the club. But it would be nice for the gaffer if everything can be sorted so he can plan for next season."

Chairman Julian Rhodes held more talks with Bower's agent yesterday. He confirmed: "We believe we are getting close to a deal with Mark."

With Wayne Jacobs leaving the club, Bower will become the longest-serving player on City's books. The former St Bede's Grammar School pupil joined as a schoolboy in 1994 and signed pro eight years ago.

But the 25-year-old only recently started his 100th City game in a career which has included two loan spells with York. He was restricted to only 12 starts last term as Bryan Robson preferred to partner Wetherall with Jason Gavin.

But Todd gave Bower his chance in pre-season when Gavin was injured in the opening friendly. He has not looked back and is the only member of the squad to have played every game.

Bower said: "The gaffer promised that I would get my opportunity and then it was up to me and he's been as good as his word. The season has gone well personally but I know I've got to keep on improving.

"But we've come a long way as a club and hopefully we can build on that next season, whatever division we are in. We were written off by the pundits last summer and I saw we were down to finish second from bottom in one table. People around the club were all targeting the magic 50-point barrier and we beat that after the Huddersfield game.

"We've not given up on this season yet and with a few teams around us still to play, it is possible to make the play-offs. But whatever happens from now it's still been encouraging and I'm looking forward to being part of it again next season."

City are still trying to keep Nicky Summerbee for another year while talks with Peter Atherton are set to begin in the next few days. Dean Windass and David Wetherall both extended their current contracts earlier this season and youngsters John Swift and Craig Bentham have also signed on.
