Baildon 8
Barnsley 36
Yorkshire Division Three leaders Barnsley inflicted a 28-point, six tries to one defeat on Baildon in this Yorkshire Silver Trophy third-round tie.
Along with West Leeds and Roundhegians, second-placed Baildon are fighting for the other promotion spot from the same division, and their next match is at Barnsley a week on Saturday.
But Jenny Lane player-coach Hugh Gumbs, currently on the sidelines with a hand injury, didn't seem too worried by events on Saturday.
He said: "This match is a lovely position to be in because we know exactly what we have to do.
"We wanted to win this match and it was a steep learning curve for some of those who played. They need to think about how to put us in a position to win, but we have a lot of players who are out.
"There is no coaching answer. We know where the mistakes are, but I will be back for the Barnsley match and so will fly half Mark Coultas."
Gumbs added: "It is near the end of the season, we wanted to be challenging for something, and we are.
"The club is in the highest league position that it has ever been regardless of what happens between now and the end of the season, but we want to get something out of it." Baildon, who have to play West Leeds at home on the final day of the season, were soon behind, Barnsley fly half Patrick Jensen making the break and centre Dean Exley scoring in the second minute.
After starting sluggishly, Baildon, bidding to be promoted with Barnsley for the second successive season, woke up, fly half Nick Lister missing with a penalty in the ninth minute.
However, the visitors came on strong again and it needed a powerful break by Baildon skipper Phil Wilson in the 16th minute to relieve the pressure.
Ten minutes later, Barnsley were held up over Baildon's line, and on the half-hour Barnsley second row Lee Pocklington was yellow-carded for use of the boot.
In the end, Baildon's only reward for a half in which they had the slope was a Lister penalty in injury-time.
Jensen's dummy and break for a superb individual try stretched the margin to 10-3 in the 46th minute, and visiting left winger Daryl Cheetham then showed his class with three tries in 23 minutes to put the game beyond the hosts.
Barnsley full back Andy Apple-yard added two conversions, but Baildon flanker Nick Murphy got a deserved try in the 78th minute.
But on a day when the midges returned and the Marshall scalp became sunburnt - this is March remember - Appleyard had the last word, scoring in the right-hand corner in the third minute of injury-time.
