Stop the press: Stuart Fielden is happy. Well, almost.

Following last weekend's muddled 46-6 victory over Leigh, Fielden stood alone outside The Coliseum, staring angrily into the gloom as the final few fans departed the stadium.

His frustration at having put in yet another performance that fell short of his own exacting standards was evident. Not the best time for an interview.

But, after putting in a storming man-of-the-match performance in Friday night's 32-22 over Hull FC, the Bulls' Great Britain prop pronounced himself pleased enough with his effort, in what was his 199th appearance for the club.

"Finally I've put in a good performance for the first time this year," said Fielden.

"It wasn't bad by my standards but I can always get better. It's the same with the team really. That was the first game this season where we've really showed up.

"It was a good start to what is a massive week coming up for us, with Leeds on Thursday night at Odsal then next Monday's trip to face St Helens."

The improved kicking game of the halves had helped the forward pack stay on top of a plucky and dangerous Hull side but, like many of his team-mates, Fielden has been left mystified as to what caused the club's shocking start to the season.

"I have no idea. It is just one of those things. People ask that question but you don't know. We've not gone away from the fundamentals.

"That question is what has had Brian Noble tearing his hair out. But the good thing is that we have fixed some of the things that have been going wrong, we now want to keep doing that and getting better."

Despite the Bulls dominating possession and territory, they somehow managed to find themselves behind with 15 minutes remaining. But a barnstorming late effort from Fielden helped ensure there was no repeat of last year's misery, when Shaun Briscoe pounced for four opportunist tries to carry Hull to a first ever Super League victory at Odsal.

"It was a similar story to the game here last year when, basically, we dominated but gave away a few soft tries," said Fielden.

"Hull were on the back foot for pretty much the whole game but we let in a few tries and they got back in the game. But it was a good test of our composure and to come back like we did puts us in good stead for this Thursday against Leeds."
