Embassy 'A' are Champions of the Keighley & District Table Tennis League. That much was confirmed as a result of their 9-1 home victory against Nelson Nomads in their final match of the season which puts them 20 points clear of Nemesis 'A'. In theory, as Nemesis have two matches in hand, they could draw level. In such an event the Title would be decided by numbers of matches won and lost, this would mean that as Nemesis have already lost this season and Embassy haven't then the Title would still be winging its way to Bingley.
Gareth Wiles took his tally to 29 from 30 with a classy max that confirms the 19 year old as the League's top player this season. He followed the defeat of Peter Wood 11-6, 11-5, 11-9 with a win against David Ayrton 11-7, 11-8, 11-7 before just snatching the third from Michael Wrigley 9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 4-11, 14-12. The Nomads also had no answer to Geoff Grange as he earned a comfortable treble, defeating Wood 11-3, 11-4, 11-5 along the way. The only Embassy player to trip up was Tony Boyd who went down to Wrigley 12-10, 11-7, 11-8.
In Division Two, Lothersdale 'C' face a nail biting climax to their season, finding themselves 10 points ahead of Nemesis 'B' with one to play as a result of their 7-3 win at Wilsden. Unfortunately for the dalesmen, Nemesis have two to play, against Cononley and Wilsden and with Lothersdale still having to face Ilkley Road 'A' at home then the final resting place of the Division Two trophy is still in the lap of the gods. Richard Crookes showed the way for Lothersdale with a crisply taken treble that included the defeat of Luke Broadbent 11-3, 11-2, 11-7. Andrew Lambe added another couple with wins against Luke and Dave Broadbent 13-11, 11-3, 11-4 and a win for Martin Mulligan against Dave, plus a point for Lambe and Crookes 11-7, 9-11, 7-11, 11-2, 11-7 against Adam and Luke in the doubles finished the scoring for Lothersdale. For Wilsden, Adam played particularly well, getting the better of Lambe 14-12, 12-10, 7-11, 11-7 and Mulligan 11-4, 17-15, 6-11, 11-6.
In the Boothman Plate Knockout Cup Round Two, Embassy 'C' and Nemesis 'B' played out a cracking tie in Bingley. Allan Jeffrey (3) struck first for Embassy, defeating Dave Manogue (0) 17-21, 21-9, 21-12. However, Les Packer (1) hit back straight away for Nemesis, getting the better of Derek Briggs (3) 10-21, 21-14, 21-16. The following three rubbers all went for Nemesis with Peter Worger (2) defeating Steve Crossland (7) 17-21, 21-16, 21-17; Manogue getting the better of Briggs 21-19, 21-16 and Worger beating Jeffrey 21-15, 21-18. This put Nemesis into a 4-1 lead, requiring only one more point to progress to the quarter finals. Although Crossland then got the better of Packer 21-15, 19-21, 21-11, Worger wrapped up the victory for Nemesis with a win against Briggs 24-2, 21-19, his third of the match. Crossland and Jeffrey grabbed consolations for Embassy against Manogue and Packer respectively to give a final score of 5-4 to Nemesis.
Lothersdale 'C' enjoyed a relatively comfortable passage to the next stage with a 7-2 win at Johnson & Johnson. Martin Mulligan (2) won all three for Lothersdale, including the defeat of John Pullen (3) 21-15, 21-18. A couple each for Richard Crookes (0) and Andrew Lambe (1) concluded the scoring for Lothersdale. Pullen, with wins against Crookes 21-16, 21-9 and Lambe 21-9, 21-10, grabbed J&J's points.
Cononley Sports go through to play St Wilf's as a result of a fighting performance at Ilkley Road 'B'. Rob McLean (7) struck first for the Riddlesden team, defeating Stuart Maude (6) 21-17, 21-19, but Cononley hit back through Paul Lister (1) who got the better of Nick Emblem (7) 21-17, 21-15. In fact it was Lister who proved to be the difference between the sides, clocking up a max with further wins against McLean 21-13, 21-16 and Chris Dunn (7) 26-28, 22-20, 22-20 and setting his team on course for a narrow 5-4 victory. For Ilkley Road, Dunn did well to beat Maude 14-21, 21-13, 21-15 and Michael Mitchell (4) 21-16, 21-17. Emblem added the other point for the losers, getting the better of Mitchell 21-14, 21-11.
