A young musical prodigy from Keighley is to showcase her talents to raise awareness of the devastating effects of cancer on teenagers.
Piano maestro Lucy McLellan will host a classical music concert at Bradford Grammar School to raise funds for charity Teenage Cancer Trust.
The 17-year-old knows more than most about the disease after her brother was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1999.
Richard, 19 at the time, received intensive chemotherapy treatment and the former Bradford Grammar School pupil eventually regained his strength.
Lucy, of Tarn Wood, Blackhill, said her brother was treated in an adult ward at Cookridge Hospital, in Leeds, but would have preferred to have been treated at a Teenage Cancer Trust unit, if one had been available at the time, because he would have been able to mix with people of his own age.
Lucy, a student at the renowned Chetham's School of Music, in Manchester, has won numerous awards and is preparing for the prestigious international Horowitz Competition, in Kiev, Ukraine.
The teenager has been playing the piano for more than ten years.
"It was incredibly difficult seeing my brother diagnosed with cancer at the age of 19, coupled with the fact he was treated in an adult ward and knew no-one his age who had cancer and he had no one with whom to share his experiences," said Lucy.
"Had he been treated on a Teenage Cancer Trust unit, I feel his cancer journey may have been a bit less traumatic.
"He would have been surrounded by people his own age and staff trained to deal with his specific needs."
Lucy said she learnt about the work of the trust when one of its representatives visited her school to talk about teenage cancer. "I am so glad I am able to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust with my music and my brother will be there supporting me throughout," she said.
Iain Kimberley, Teenage Cancer Trust's representative for the North of England, said: "We are all completely in awe of Lucy's talent and so grateful to her, the McLellan family and Bradford Grammar School for making this event possible."
The trust has two units in Yorkshire -- at St James's Hospital, in Leeds, and at Weston Park, in Sheffield.
Teenage Cancer Trust focuses on the needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer.
The trust has built eight units across the UK dedicated to providing treatment for teenagers with cancer and is aiming to build 20 in total.
Funds raised at the event will be donated to building further units. The concert, which will include performances of music by Chopin, Bach, Liszt and Beethoven, is taking place next Saturday, at 7.30pm.
Tickets are priced £7.50 for adults and £5 concessions. They are available on the door or by contacting Lucy's mum, Sue, on 01535 602570.
