Walking around Silsden non-stop for 24 hours may seem a strange thing to do but it's all in a good cause for Kevin Ogden.
He is taking on the challenge to raise funds to send three-year-old Silsden boy Jack Towers to a special clinic in California, which offers help and support to parents and their deaf children.
Kevin, a family friend of the Towers, starts the sponsored walk, at 10am, on Saturday, April 16, near St James's Church, Silsden, and will walk for a full day around a mile-long route in the town. He estimates he will walk around 50 miles in total.
"You see people doing marathons and half marathons and I just thought a 24-hour walk would be something different," said Kevin. I'll definitely do the full course with just short stops for food and toilet breaks. I think a few other people will be joining me for part of the course, although anyone willing to join in is more than welcome."
All the money raised by the walk will help fund Jack and his parents' three-week stay at the John Tracy Clinic, in Los Angeles. Jack's parents, Joanne and Andrew, hope the clinic will provide the impetus for improved hearing.
Despite having a cochlear implant last January, they feel Jack is not making as much progress as they would like. The private clinic offers summer sessions for children who are deaf and hard of hearing and support for their families.
At the clinic, the deaf or hard of hearing toddlers work together in groups, with two classrooms of 10-12 children each. Although the sessions are free of charge, the family must pay for flights and accommodation.
As part of the fundraising initiatives, the family has also organised a fun day at Oakworth Cricket Club, on April 17. A number of activities have been planned, including bouncy castles and face painting. Anyone wishing to sponsor Kevin should phone 01535 655912.
