FROM MY SISTER'S LIPS. Publisher: Bantam; Author: Na'ima Robert; Price: £7.99.

Covered from head to toe with only her eyes visible, the sight of a Muslim woman on a western city street rarely fails to provoke a strong reaction.

Assuming these women are forced to cover, or are uneducated immigrants yet to discover the delights of western freedoms, common reactions range from shock and horror to pity or even fear.

But what do we really know about these women, their lives, hopes, dreams and aspirations?

Defying stereotypes and challenging our assumptions, From My Sisters' Lips is a rare and fascinating glimpse into the lives of a community of Muslim women.

Many of them convert to Islam, the women share, first-hand, their challenges, convictions and faith.

Candid, honest and surprising they offer a unique insight into what it really means to live as a Muslim woman in their community.

Na'ima B Robert, a lively and intelligent young woman living in London, embraced Islam six years ago.

Taking her first tentative steps to covering, she felt a huge sense of empowerment, no longer judged on physical appearances alone.

As Na'ima recounts the compelling story of her conversion to Islam, she includes personal accounts from other extraordinary Muslim woman who have also chosen to live as Muslims behind the veil.

Dispelling many of the myths surrounding covered women, From My Sisters' Lips is a personal and intimate sharing of many issues important to Muslim women, from self-image, covering and submission, to arranged marriage, polygamy and motherhood.

Informative and conversational, From My Sisters' Lips introduces a strong and proud sisterhood who are both open and illuminating.
