The family of a devoted dad-of-six has paid tribute to his loving nature and his work in the community after he died in a street fight.

Today the brother of 36-year-old Sakunder Hussain spoke of his family's devastation.

Mr Hussain was pronounced dead at Bradford Royal Infirmary after the fatal fight broke out in Waverley Road, Lidget Green.

Around 40 to 50 people from the street came out after the commotion at around 9pm on Friday evening. One of the residents tried to resuscitate Mr Hussain, who suffered from diabetes and walked with a stick, before paramedics arrived.

His brother Sammunder Hussain, 33, who got to the scene before the emergency services, said: "To see my own flesh and blood lying there, almost lifeless was a terrible thing.

"He was a devout man, a charitable man with a good heart.

"Everyone knew him. He helped anyone in need, taking bins out, fixing lights, collecting for the mosques or trying to solve any disputes. He was respected but he was humble."

He prayed five times a day and had a key to the Jamia-Tablighu-L-Al-Islam mosque in Lidget Green close to Cumberland Road where he lived.

His family believe he might have been on his way by car to visit relatives and friends when the incident happened.

Mr Hussain said: "It's still a mystery exactly what happened. This has been a complete waste of a decent life without any thought for the family he has left behind who will now have to bear the pain of living without him."

The victim, who lived in Cumberland Road, Lidget Green, leaves a wife and six children, four brothers, three sisters and his mother. The youngest of his children is three and the oldest is 16.

Friend and cousin Sajid Hussain said: "The family s struggling with their sorrow and the sorrow will be with them forever."

Mr Hussain was also a strong supporter of the Labour party, and Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe paid his own tribute and said: "He was a likeable character, keen to be at the forefront of anything that would help the neighbourhood. It's a sad and tragic loss for this community to lose him so young."

And Lidget Green ward councillor Munir Ahmed (Lab.) said: "I was shocked and stung when I heard the news.

"He was one of my best friends, always active and helpful in the community and always kept any promises he made. He was particularly good with young people and tried to educate them about what was right and wrong."

A 28-year-old local man has been charged with manslaughter and is due to appear before Bradford Magistrates later today and a 21-year-old local man, has been questioned over the weekend and released on police bail.
