Councillors have called for the speed limit to be lowered after carrying out their own speed checks.

Residents and ward councillors in Cullingworth claim some vehicles are travelling at more than twice the legal limit through the village and have called for speed to be restricted from 30 to 20mph.

Cullingworth parish councillor Liz Balding said: "This village is used as a race track and there have been a number of accidents.

"With help from the police we have carried out six or seven speed watches and have found more than 300 drivers travelling over the speed limit. In fact, recently, we clocked one driver travelling through the village at 71 miles per hour.

"We really need this 20mph zone and would also like flashing signs which inform people of how fast they are travelling installed."

Sergeant Esther Hobbs, of the Bingley Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "We have been operating a community speed watch quite successfully in the area and it does seem that a large number of people are speeding through the village in excess of limits. Certainly, there does seem a need for increased legislation."

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "Any requests for 20mph speed limits and traffic management measures, particularly in residential areas or near schools, would be investigated by traffic engineers and if proved feasible, would then be put forward as a candidate, along with other requests, to the Shipley Area Community Forum.

"When or if a site is chosen for funding, local members, residents and other road users will be consulted on the different proposals."
