T&A reader John Stead of Odsal has some suggestions for New Year's Resolutions for all Bradfordians to adopt.

I would like to wish everybody living in Bradford and District a very Happy New Year for 2006.

Could I also offer the following New Year Resolutions which we could all try and keep. . .

Every morning for the next 365 days, we should resolve to think of something good about Bradford. Let me give you a few starters for nothing: Bradford Bulls, Lister Park, Haworth, Saltaire, the Museum of Photography, Film and Television, the Alhambra and Bradford City (despite some recent frustrations). That's the first week gone!

We should resolve to believe that the redevelopments which are currently going on in the city centre will actually improve our city, the shopping and our image.

Let's accept that Bradford has problems which need to be dealt with either sooner or later but we must remember that other towns and cities like Halifax, Huddersfield and, yes, even Leeds have their problems, too. It is obvious by the length of time it has taken Leeds to agree to the £9m loan to Yorkshire County Cricket that they have trouble making decisions.

We should encourage rather than discourage all things Bradford. Our schools are getting better, even if more slowly than we would like, our streets are getting cleaner and cleaner, and our Council, despite much criticism, is actually getting better and more efficient.

During the next 365 days we should resolve to be more positive about our city and remember why we live here. It is a fact that people born in Bradford are more likely to stay put than in most other cities in Britain. If this fact is correct then we in Bradford must be doing something right.

We need to remember that in Bradford we have some of the best amateur sport in the country such as the Bradford Cricket League. Bradford Park Avenue, Thackley and Eccleshill are excellent examples of top amateur football clubs.

Rugby League and Union thrive here and other sports are always well represented. Maybe we need to resolve to support as many amateur sports as possible in 2006.

Of course we can all do better in all aspects of our lives in Bradford. Though we are slowly moving up the ladders of improvement, can we not resolve to do our little bit to see us move more quickly?

We should work hard at making sure that our priorities regarding further improvement should include saving The Odeon and getting Maud Marshall to listen to us residents of Bradford.

We should forget about 'the lake' and save the Connaught Rooms from total destruction.

We in Bradford should remember that Keighley, Bingley, Eldwick and Wilsden and other outlying areas deserve our attention and that they have a large amount to contribute to our future. Of course it would be good if Keighley and Bingley etc thought about Bradford as well.

Last of all, we should resolve that whatever our class, culture or sex, we must continue to treat each other with the respect we all deserve and that all of us should try and live in peace and harmony.

So let's be positive in 2006 and I have no doubt that when we get to New year 2007 we will all feel we have contributed to making Bradford and District an even better place to live in.
