City have turned down a bid from Barnsley for Dean Windass.

The Tykes last night came in with an offer, understood to be £100,000, for the 36-year-old but it was rejected by chairman Julian Rhodes.

"Dean is worth far more to us than what they offered, although we have no plans to lose him anyway," said Rhodes.

"When Barnsley contacted me, it was a case of thanks but no thanks."

Barnsley's interest emerged after Windass publicly condemned the critics who have been barracking him at Valley Parade - but he insisted he was in the dark about the transfer bid.

Windass said: "I didn't know anything about it until Julian rang me.

"Obviously it's flattering when another club are interested in you - I must be doing something right if Wigan and then Barnsley are coming in for me."

City do not expect Barnsley to return with an improved figure.

Barnsley chairman Gordon Shepherd confirmed: "We made an offer but Bradford want to keep him, quite understandably.

"We've a young side, one of the youngest in the league, and we thought there may be room for a bit of an older head among them. Dean would have fitted the bill."

As well as Windass, City have also kept hold of Richard Edghill, who ignored a rival League One club to re-sign - on less money.

An unnamed side made a late bid to hijack the deal to stay at Valley Parade.

But Edghill rejected the rival offer, believed to be on higher wages, to keep faith with the Bantams with a contract that will tie him down for another 18 months.

"It's taken a while but we got there in the end," said a delighted Colin Todd.

"We need all the players we can and Richard gives us the option that he can play left back as well as on the right. He could even fill in at centre back if necessary.

"He is an asset to this club and has earned the right to be given another contract."

Edghill, who has made 25 appearances so far, will not be involved in the squad for Saturday's clash at Yeovil.

He is still recovering from the hamstring injury he suffered against Scunthorpe and Todd does not want to take any chances.

"Richard has been doing a little bit of training but he's not ready for the weekend, especially with a six-hour coach journey as well," said the City boss.

"He will need an extra week so that he's available for the Tranmere home game."
