by Kathie Griffiths T&A Reporter It might be Easter but these bunnies might be soon left feeling rather unhoppy.

More money is desperately needed to keep their sanctuary in funds.

Heaton’s Bunny Camp Sanctuary in Stoney Ridge Avenue has 40 rabbits in its hutches – and at least 20 could be re-homed.

Sonya McDonough, who runs the sanctuary, says it costs £660 a month to keep it going but times are still hard because of the credit crunch and funds are drying up.

She said: “We used to make about £1,800 on our open days that would keep us topped up for about three months but last year it only made the hundreds.

“We get some reliable sponsorship but other than that we depend totally on people’s generosity.”

Bunny Camp is hoping its next open day on Sunday, April 18, will do better.

Mrs McDonough said: “Everyone is welcome to come along and have a look round to see what we do here.

“If anyone wants to offer a good home we’d be happy to hear from them but it’s a serious undertaking.

“This Easter our slogan is ‘Make mine chocolate’ not a real rabbit as a gift.

“People don’t always realise what they’re taking on when they get a rabbit – they can live for up to 18 years and require daily exercise and care.”
