A dance teacher who was treated for breast cancer is joining her young students for a dancing queen-themed fundraising extravaganza.

The DM Academy in Shipley is hosting the Mamma Mia Spectacular in aid of regional charity Breast Cancer Haven.

The event – aimed at mums and daughters – is described as ‘an afternoon of fun, food, fashion and dancing’.

Those attending will be encouraged to dress as disco dancing queens and attractions include cocktails and ‘mocktails’, fashions stalls, a pink afternoon tea, fashion shows by Talulla’s of Shipley and entertainment from Abba tribute band Planet Abba. Deana Morgan, proprietor of the DM Academy, was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2006 and says the charity has been a great support. “Knowing firsthand how valuable Breast Cancer Haven is for women and men living with breast cancer, I want to do all I can to continue raising awareness of the charity,” she said.

“This event means we can spread a little fun and happiness too.”

Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh, a former pupil of DM Academy, agreed to be an ambassador for the charity after hearing about her friend and former teacher Deana’s battle.

Last year Kimberley joined Deana for Breast Cancer Haven’s ‘High Heel-a-thon’ in which 300 people, including Bradford Bulls players, took to the streets of Leeds in stilettos to raise funds. Breast Cancer Haven provides a free programme to anyone affected by breast cancer, which includes counselling, complementary the-rapies, support and information.

The Leeds Haven, used by Bradford cancer sufferers, opened in 2008 and has provided more than 4,500 therapy appointments.

It costs £1,400 to provide the programme for every Haven user. Yorkshire fundraising executive Jane King said money raised from the Mamma Mia Spectacular will mean more breast cancer patients can be supported by the charity.

“This event will appeal to lots of mums and their daughters,” she said.
