Campaigners want to see safety measures installed on a “nightmare” Shipley road.

The junction of Branksome Drive and Bradford Road has been described as “very, very dangerous” by motorists who say they do not want there to be a serious accident before action is taken.

Karen Hunt, a resident of Branksome Grove, a cul-de-sac at the end of Branksome Drive, said: “There’s a lot of traffic on that road all the time, there’s no such thing as rush hour because it’s busy all the time.

“You really have to have your wits about you. You have to be really quick, which is dangerous.”

Friends of Andy Rowley who live on Branksome Drive contacted him after he successfully campaigned for safety measures at a Windhill trouble-spot.

He said: “It is a life-threatening situation. Anyone turning left out of Branksome Drive turns into a bus lane and turning right cars have to cross two lanes of traffic.

“It is absolutely horrendous.

“It needs to be sorted out. It’s a very, very dangerous situation.”

He said residents believed a set of traffic lights or another traffic-calming measure would ease the worries of concerned residents who he says are “taking their lives into their hands”.

Shipley MP Philip Davies, who is supporting the residents, said: “If you want to turn right you’ve got no chance. You have to go across a dual carriageway. It is an absolute nightmare and a bit of a blackspot.

“It needs something to make it easier for residents.

“Waiting until people get injured or die seems crazy. I wholeheartedly agree with the residents and I will continue to press the Council on it.”

Richard Gelder, Bradford Council’s transportation development manager, said: “As part of the proposed improvements for Saltaire Roundabout, the A650 Bradford Road from the Bankfield Hotel to Saltaire is being looked at in terms of helping pedestrians to cross and improving bus journey times along this key corridor.

“No firm proposals for the Branksome Drive junction have been developed as part of the Saltaire Roundabout scheme.

“However, the redevelopment of Nab Wood School may affect the nearby junction of Bradford Road and New Close Road, and we are awaiting the outcome of that scheme before looking at any possible improvements as part of the Saltaire roundabout proposals.”
