Queensbury Library has shut its doors to the public for at least six weeks after rain threatened to bring down the ceiling.

Officials from Bradford Council had an emergency meeting yesterday at the library in Victoria Hall to look at the damage and make plans for urgent repairs to be carried out.

A Council spokesman said no books had been damaged, the ceiling had not fallen in and no Easter events over the school holidays have had to be cancelled.

Jane Heap, Bradford Council’s acting libraries manager, said: “It is likely that the library will be closed for six to eight weeks.”

And she added: “We will do everything we can to minimise any disruption.”

Yesterday, book borrowers were being met at the door by library staff who were there collecting returns.

Queensbury councillor Michael Walls (Cons) said: “Water coming into the building’s roof has been a perpetual problem.

“The library is well used by the community so it’s important repairs are carried out as quickly as possible.”

Meanwhile Council bosses were staying tight-lipped about how much the repairs will cost.

A spokesman said: “We won’t really know what the cost will be until all the work’s been done.”
