A 21-year-old man has been jailed for three years for leading police on a high-speed chase and going on a house-breaking spree while on bail for dangerous driving.
Judge Robert Bartfield told Jamie Spencer: “The public are entitled to a rest from you.”
Spencer, of Shirley Road, Tong Street, Bradford, led police on a five- mile chase through Shipley in a stolen car on August 16 last year.
He pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle-taking, including dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified.
Prosecutor Alisha Kaye told Bradford Crown Court yesterday that Spencer was caught after running from the damaged Ford Fiesta in Hollin Lane, Baildon.
During a police pursuit, he drove on the wrong side of the road, jumped red lights and mounted a footpath.
He had ignored police orders to stop and driven at up to 45mph on streets including Crag Road, Owlet Road and Hollin Road, the court heard.
While on bail, Spencer attempted to break into two houses in the Bierley area of Bradford.
He asked the court to take into consideration 16 further offences, including six house burglaries and eight attempted burglaries.
Two women were disturbed in the night by Spencer’s efforts to get into their homes using molegrips to break door locks.
Ian Hudson, Spencer’s solicitor advocate, said he was very remorseful and wanted to start again with a clean slate. He had turned to drink last autumn after the deaths of three family members.
Spencer did not originally take the Fiesta but he knew it was stolen, said Mr Hudson.
Judge Bartfield banned Spencer from driving for two years.
He must take an extended retest before he gets behind the wheel.
