Running to stand still, in the words of the U2 song, is what nine Yorkshire members of a banking and financial services group did to raise £4,000 for Bradford City’s £100,000 Burns Unit Appeal.

They ran 108 miles in just over two hours on treadmills. The same team will be at it again on Thursday, April 1, at Low Moor’s Best Western Guide Post Hotel.

The total raised at these events, and from the sale of a special T-shirt at Valley Parade on Tuesday night, will be matched by the Macquarie Group Foundation, the runners’ employer.

Bradford-born Bradley Northrop, 22, one of the runners and a keen amateur footballer, explained why the Australian-based group is supporting their efforts.

He said: “Our organisation encourages helping local organisations. So when we moved into our new offices in Leeds I suggested the Burns Unit. Our target in total is to raise £20,000 and we are very confident of achieving this. That includes the firm’s contribution.’’ Next Thursday’s run starts at 7.30pm. Admission is £5 which includes entry to a raffle. Guests from Bradford City Football Club will be attending.

Another big event coming up on Saturday, April 17, is the Razor Ruddock dinner at Valley Parade at which City’s former player and manager Stuart McCall and most of the 1984/85 Third Division Championship-winning side will be attending.

Among the money-raising events at the dinner will be an auction of up to 30 items of sports memorabilia, including Chris Withe’s 1984/85 City shirt, signed shirts from Notts County and Liverpool and a cricket bat signed by West Indies star batsman Brian Lara.

To date 350 of the 480 tickets available, ranging in cost from £40 up to £80, have been sold.

Event organiser Mick Shackleton said: “We’re hoping to raise about £5,000 after costs. If we can push ticket sales up to 480 we could double that.”

These events could boost the Burns Unit Appeal by £25,000, to bring the running total to about £60,000.

Meanwhile, a charity car wash at Idle fire station on Saturday from 11am to 4pm will also raise money for the Burns Unit Appeal alongside The Fire Fighters Charity.
