Two men were caught attempting to steal scrap metal from a derelict nursing home in Wilsden, a court heard.

Andi Halliday, 23, of Hirst Wood Crescent, Saltaire, and John Wright, 24, of Hinchcliffe Avenue, Baildon, were found hiding in the loft of Laurel Bank, Main Street, by police who had been alerted when flashing lights were seen in the building at 10.30pm on February 26.

Both men admitted intending to steal when they appeared before magistrates in Bingley today and were ordered to carry out 60 hours’ community service and told to pay £85 court costs.

The Bench heard that Halliday had been cautioned just ten days before the incident for an offence of intending to steal.

Magistrates were told that the men had been given a lift by someone they knew who in repayment asked them to see if they could get some scrap from the building.
