Two men who will cycle more than 3,850 miles for charity this summer would like everyone in Keighley district to donate £1.

Steve Brier, of Shann Park, and Brian Thorpe, from Stockbridge, will cycle around the coast of Britain to raise money for Airedale Hospital’s stroke unit and the local branch of the national Muscular Dystrophy campaign.

The pair are members of the Keighley & District Charities group.

They are due to depart from Church Green for their venture on June 17, which they have dubbed the Keighley Koastal CyKle, or 3Ks for short.

As part of their £1 Challenge, to show what can be achieved if many people each contribute a small amount, they have set up a ‘post box’ in the Airedale Centre, where people can drop in their donations and collect fliers to participate in a prize draw.

The box is located between Next and Boots.

Mr Brier said: “When we cycle we’ll be representing Keighley and district.

“But no matter how much we do, unless the people of this area support us it’ll be worthless. This is their event – not ours.

“While there is a recession on it’s not right to ask for a lot of money from each person, but if everyone in this area gives just £1 we can raise more than £50,000.

“Race Print have done us 20,000 £1 challenge fliers, each of which has a tear-off slip so people who donate can take part in a draw.

“The first prize will be the bike I’m doing the cycle on, which is worth £1,100.”

He said he and his helpers would try to deliver as many of the fliers as possible to homes in the district, but said they could also be collected from the charity post box.

“On most Saturdays till mid-June we’ll be in the Airedale Centre, near Gregg’s Cafe, for people to speak to us and to accept donations personally,” he said.

He said he and Mr Thorpe were still seeking a third cyclist – male or female – to take part in the challenge alongside them.

This person would have to be available between Thursday, June 17, and Saturday, July 3.

Anyone interested in doing the cycle should e-mail Mr Brier at kadcg@btinternet.com The cyclists are due to finish their gruelling journey on Keighley Gala Day, Saturday July 3, in Church Green.
