Mystery surrounds the discovery of bones in a secluded street in Bradford city centre.

Police cordoned off Back Roundhill Place, near Westgate, to allow an investigation to take place yesterday afternoon.

A doctor was called to the scene to examine the bones, but was unable to establish who or what they were from.

They were taken away for further forensic examination.

West Yorkshire Police said the bones appeared to have been there for some time.

A police spokesman said: “Police attended reports of bones being found on Grattan Road at 12.41pm.

“They have been taken away for further forensic examination as a doctor at the scene has not been able to decide what they are, but it appears they have been there for some time.”

A police photographer attended Back Roundhill Place to take pictures of the scene.

Every flat in the street is boarded up and unoccupied. Homes on each side of the street, which runs from Grattan Road to Westend Street, are in a derelict and deteriorating condition.

In recent years, there have been proposals and attempts to regenerate the area around Chain Street and Grattan Road.

Will Alsop’s city centre masterplan included plans for a new urban village between Sunbridge Road and Westgate, bringing 1,500 new homes to the Goitside area.

Some homes have been upgraded, while the conversion of the Woolston Warehouse into 100 high-quality apartments provided a timely boost for the area.

Despite this, many streets in the area remain in a run-down state, with litter and graffiti a prominent feature.
