A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a Bradford teenager who was stabbed to death.

Mohammed Rohail, 22, of Sandford Road, Bradford Moor, is accused of killing Mohammed Rayaib, 19, of Gladstone Street, also in Bradford Moor.

Mr Rayaib, who lived with his parents and worked at his family’s take-away food shop, died from a stab wound after he was attacked near his home at about 12.40am on Tuesday.

Rohail was flanked by two security guards as he walked up the steps into the glass dock at Bradford Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

A packed courthouse looked on as the clerk read out the charge against the defendant.

Rohail, who has short black hair and wore a black jumper and dark trousers, stood up throughout the five-minute hearing. He spoke only once, in a deep voice, to confirm his name, age and address.

Paul Ramsay, prosecuting on behalf of the Crown Prosecution Service, told the court that Rohail was charged with an indictable offence and asked for the case to be committed to Crown Court.

Rohail’s solicitor, Mohammed Hussain, agreed with that request and made no application for bail.

Chairman of the bench, Alan Wrigley, remanded Rohail in custody to appear at Bradford Crown Court next Tuesday.

Speaking after the court hearing, Councillor Mohammed Shafiq (Lab, Bradford Moor), said he had been in daily contact with the victim’s family at the mosque where they pray.

He said: “They are still distraught, especially his father, and they are still unable to come to terms with it. It’s really upsetting for them.”

Coun Shafiq said he believed the police had done everything possible and he also praised the community for helping officers with their inquiries.

He said: “I think the story in the T&A touched the hearts of the local people and spurred them on to help the police. There is a great community spirit here and I understand that a lot of people have come forward with information after reading the paper.”

* Two more men were charged with murder last night in connection with the case. Iqbal Amriz, 31, of Curzon Road, Bradford Moor, and Ibrar Saddiq, 26, of Fitzroy Road, also Bradford Moor, were due to appear at Bradford Magistrates Court today.

Senior investigating officer, Det Supt Steve Payne said: “I am still appealing for witnesses and would urge anyone with information about the death of Mohammed Rayaib to come forward and contact police.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team on 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
