Enjoying film might seem like a passive activity, but for those with a passion to find out more about movies, there are a wealth of opportunities in the Bradford district.

As part of the City of Film project, a body called the Learn Task And Delivery Board was set up to bring together what is already on offer, create new opportunities and ensure that Bradford is, by the target date of 2020, the best place to learn about all aspects of film.

Current membership of the Board includes Bradford Council’s Children’s Services, National Media Museum Education Department, Screen Yorkshire,Bradford Young Chamber, Bradford WOW Academy, Bradford Foyer, Cape UK, Education Bradford, Fabric (Creative Bradford) and University of Bradford – School of Computing, Informatics and Media.

Sarah Mumford, of the National Media Museum, who is on the board, says the foundations of the programme can be summed up in three Cs: developing a critical understanding of films, creating more cultural access, and encouraging creativity.

The aim is to improve people’s understanding of film from an early age with an ambitious programme of learning development in schools and communities.

Sarah says: “We’ve done an audit of what is currently being offered and now we’re coming up with new ideas for future collaborations.

“Young people today are much more media-literate than ever before, and media is more prevalent on the school curriculum.

“Children get very excited by the opportunities presented to them once they discover that they can become involved in the creative process.”

Of course, not every child in Bradford will want or be able to pursue a career in the film industry, but that isn’t the point – by developing that creativity, critical faculties, drive and ambition, young people will be set up to better tackle any challenges in life.

And for those that do decide that a career in the media is for them, they will be encouraged to not only want to create movies, but to “think outside the box” and bring a different creative angle to what they do.

One idea the board is implementing is to set up film clubs within schools – by 2020 they want every school in Bradford to have its own club and to discuss film both on the curriculum and in extra-curricular activities.
