Detectives investigating a terrifying ram-raid robbery have released this CCTV image of masked men “systematically” removing more than £100,000 of jewellery from the shop’s display shelves.

A stolen Ford Focus car was reversed at high speed through the front window of Shaandar Zewar Jewellers, in Bradford Moor, before four masked men, two brandishing guns, pillaged the shop.

Police spent this morning near the scene in Maidstone Street, stopping motorists and pedestrians to ask if they had any information about the incident, which happened at 11am a week earlier.

Mohammed Umer, the shop’s devastated owner, revealed he had no insurance to cover the cost of the stolen jewellery, which he estimated at more than £100,000.

The 31-year-old was at a jewellery trade fair in Hong Kong when the incident happened, but his 63-year-old dad Mohammed Bashir was working in the shop with another member of staff at the time.

Mr Umer said: “My dad hasn’t spoken much since this happened. He has been very quiet and seems to be traumatised.

“I feel really guilty that this happened to him, it should have been me here rather than him. He was doing me a favour by staying in my shop for a bit because I was away on a business trip.

“We have no insurance. It’s something I didn’t really think about. I didn’t think it was going to happen like this, but you learn from your mistakes.”

Mr Umer, a father-of-three, said his wife and children were still very upset by what had happened and admitted he felt “scared” of returning to the shop after the incident.

It has emerged that the incident could now be featured on the BBC TV show Crimewatch.

Detective Inspector Ian Bryar, of Bradford South CID, said the raid was carried out by four masked men, armed with what police believed to be a shotgun and a handgun.

He said: “They systematically took jewellery from the display shelves and made their getaway in another stolen vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf GTI, that was parked outside.”

Det Insp Bryar said he believed the robbers were from Bradford and had been watching the premises in the days and weeks leading up to the robbery.

He said: “We believe it’s a local team.”

Det Insp Bryar said the robbers seemed to know the movements of the people who worked at the shop and the exact time at which the jewellery would be removed from the safe and put on display.

He said the Golf had been stolen during a Hanoi-style burglary in Leeds about a month earlier and then ‘cloned’ with copies of registration plates from a legitimate vehicle. The car was found burned out on Bullroyd Avenue, Girlington, a short time later.

He said: “The other car, a Ford Focus, was stolen the day before in Girlington where a member of the public left the keys in the ignition, got out of his car and someone has got into it and taken it away.”

The front of the building is being repaired by workmen and the shop is due to reopen next Monday with additional security measures, including an anti-burglar smoke cloak.

Anyone who witnessed the robbery or has any information about should call Bradford South CID on 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
