A Saltaire bistro is the first of its kind in district to win an award for helping work experience students.

Vicars in Victoria Road, Saltaire, has been given a quality standard award by Education Bradford for taking on young people from schools and colleges. The award is presented to businesses which demonstrate they provide a well-structured work experience programme.

Project manager Marianne Clough said: “Teenagers often get a bad press but in every young person who has come to us we see potential.

“While they are with us they learn some vital life skills, grow in confidence as they talk to customers and we see their creative side blossom in the kitchen too.

“In return we get a chance to mix with young people and see life through their eyes.”

The café is run as a community centre, cafe, and bistro, which was started by two vicars. It is now a social enterprise run by a team of Christians and volunteers.
