People driving without insurance or a licence were taught a lesson by police.
A mobile car crusher set up shop at the junction of Calverley Lane and the A6120 Broadway, Horsforth, to give a stark warning to drivers.
Officers from North West Leeds Division joined forces with West Yorkshire Police’s motorcycle unit, student officers from the force training school and agencies including Leeds City Council, and HM Revenue and Customs for an operation targeting road users who flout the law.
Teams of officers using automatic number plate recognition technology trawled roads in the area to identify suspect vehicles which were stopped and directed to the check site.
The same agencies had run the initial phase of the operation from Gallagher Leisure Park, in Thornbury, the previous week. Chief Inspector Elizabeth Belton, who led the aoperation, said: “We hope that seeing the car crusher in action will have provided a dramatic illustration to people of the drastic action we can take to get uninsured and unlicensed drivers off our roads.”
