Police have vowed to continue to name and shame violent criminals after the success of a poster that told the public a gang had been jailed.

More than 900 posters, showing the faces of six men locked up for their roles in disorder in Keighley, have been put up in the Queens Road area of Knowle Park in the town.

The posters carried photographs of Mohammed Shabir, Sagheer Bashir, Shafiqual Ali, Junaid Miah, Mohammed Habib Ullah and Kabir Bashir, all from Knowle Park, who were sentenced to a combined total of more than 16 years when they appeared at Bradford Crown Court in January.

They pleaded guilty to crimes committed during fighting in March 2008 in which weapons were used.

The posters include appeals to the public to contact them about crime or disorder, with points of contact.

Inspector Wayne Horner, of Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We have had some very positive feedback from residents in the Knowle Park area following the conviction of these men and we have found residents have responded very well to the local updates booklets such as this can provide.”

Chief Superintendent Allan Doherty, divisional commander for Airedale and North Bradford Police, said the poster method would be used again.

He said: “We believe this is a good way of keeping people informed about the issues which they have raised, and we hope to use this method across the division to help keep people aware of key issues in their communities."

Chief Supt Doherty, who is retiring at the end of this month, said the new booklet was a direct response to feedback from residents who said they wanted to be kept better informed by police about the progress of inquiries.
