Chefs at the National Media Museum are making a giant cake for Bradford’s City of Film celebrations.

The massive orange sponge will spell out the word ‘Bradford’ with each edible letter measuring around 1m high and 60cm wide.

Ingredients used in the cake mix include 27,200 kg of sugar, 32,800 kg of self-raising four, 14,000 kg of margarine, 64 dozen eggs, 1760 kg of golden syrup and 320 grams of baking power.

Peel and juice from 40 oranges as well as 6kg of apricot jam and 60kg of regal icing have also been used. The B-shaped part of the cake will be served at a civic reception to launch City of Film on Thursday, March 18. The other seven letters are to be given to charities.

Anthony Hegney, general manager of Digby Trout Restaurants, which runs the museum’s catering service, where the cake is being made, said: “I would like Telegraph & Argus readers to name charities which should receive the rest of the cake.

“I’m giving the ‘O’ part of it to Overgate Hospice as it’s a charity close to my heart because my dad’s staying there but I need help deciding where the other six letters should go.

“I wanted a novel way of celebrating Bradford becoming the first City of Film. The charities can use the cake as they wish for their staff, visitors, patients or users. Each letter will serve around 100 portions.”

To nominate a charity, send an e-mail to anthony.hegney@ nationalmediamuseum.org.uk, with the reason why, by Tuesday, March 16.

Other events to celebrate the launch of City of Film will be held throughout the following weekend and include screening opportunities at Bradford Playhouse, a ‘pop-up’ free cinema in an empty shop in Centenary Square and a family fun day at the National Media Museum.
