As a region we have developed a diverse mixed economy which gives us resilience in difficult times. But to remain competitive, companies need to stay ahead of the game, and innovation is key to this. This is why Yorkshire Forward is keen to promote innovation successes in Yorkshire and Humber.

Last Wednesday evening, more than 240 businesses, universities and research organisations attended the Innovator/10 Awards Ceremony at the Leeds City Museum. Two companies from the Bradford area were among the 12 shortlisted companies from across the region that were in the running to receive one of the four awards.

Bradford-based Belgravium Ltd developed PalletStar, which is a combination of mobile computing hardware and application software designed for use by logistics companies offering pallet distribution services. PalletStar, which boasts features not available from any competitor, was shotlisted for the Innovation In Action Award which aims to celebrate an innovative new product, process or service.

Radio Design Ltd, based in Shipley, took home the Young Innovative Business Award, which is aimed at businesses that have shown creativity and entrepreneurial flair in the launch and early growth stages. The company has come up with a way to allow up to three cellular base stations from two UK-based mobile phone system operators to share the same antenna system, resulting in both site rental and equipment cost savings.

The company is a close-knit team with many employees being involved in the concept, design, development, manufacture and commercialisation of the product. Along with the award, they won a £3,000 prize to spend on further innovative developments and activities.

The Innovator/10 Awards demonstrate the benefits of developing new ideas and technologies, and it’s important that Bradford businesses consider this when thinking about the future. Day-to-day management is essential, but companies need to think about tomorrow and gaining a competitive advantage.
