The resurgence of Saltaire-based digital TV technology firm Pace plc is astonishing.

Only three years ago this business nearly went bust – and now it is riding high as the world’s second-largest supplier of set-top boxes for pay-TV operators.

It recently revealed another set of amazing results with profits up by more than 400 per cent and more than 17 million set-top boxes delivered around the globe in 2009 – more than ever before.

Pace has revitalised the former Salts Mill where 450 people work. Another 600 are employed in China, India and the United States.

Undoubtedly, Pace is in the right place at the right time and benefiting from the boom in digital broadcasting, high-definition viewing and other high-tech developments.

But such outstanding success does not just happen. By reading market trends and innovating, Pace has ensured that its products are aligned to the market.

Under chief executive Neil Gaydon, Pace has put in place systems that ensure that the boxes get delivered to customers – a major failing in its troubled days – and given product teams direct responsibility for particular clients.

Also, at its HQ there is a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Everyone is under pressure to deliver and work hard, but Neil and his top team also believe that work should be fun as well as rewarding.

Bradford could do with more companies like this.
