Bradford’s largest environmental charity has produced a short film to encourage people to grow their own organic fruit and vegetables.

The film features a snapshot of the work carried out by Bradford Community Environment Project (BCEP) which aims to contribute to the sustainable regeneration of Bradford through environmental programmes, inspired by community needs.

One of its best-known ongoing projects is the Grow Organic programme, designed to promote healthy eating.

The scheme offers food-growing sessions on allotments for school children, youth groups and ‘hard to reach’ groups, particularly women of South Asian origin.

The film shows the organisation’s work with reception children at Ryecroft Primary School, its partnership with a women’s community growing group at Scotchman Road allotments in Manningham, and its work with a refugee group in partnership with Bradford Action for Refugees.

Carlton Smith, chief executive of BCEP, said: “We are delighted to have this opportunity to say thank you to the people who took part in the making of the film, and to celebrate the success of the Grow Organic programme. “Learning to grow your own food is a great way of keeping fit, eating healthily and connecting with other people, and this film is about getting that message across to as many people as possible.”

The film, which is about five minutes long, was made with the help of a grant from the Media Trust. Staff at BCEP are looking forward to a celebration event to unveil the film on Monday at Carlisle Business Centre, Manningham.

The film will be shown to a special audience, including people who starred in it, BCEP trustees, local councillors and representatives of Bradford and Airedale NHS, which funds BCEP’s Grow Organic programme.

The charity has undertaken a series of projects in past years, including the Holme Wood and Bierley Food Initiative, which established food growing areas at Bierley Community Centre, Newhall Park Primary, Lowerfields Primary and St John’s Primary schools.

It also spearheaded a Home Safety Scheme in the Manningham and Girlington areas, promoting a safe home environment for children through safety advice and equipment.
