A teenager was wounded when she tried to disarm her brother before their nine-year-old sibling was stabbed to death, a Bradford inquest heard today.

Jack James Taylor died of multiple stab wounds, including one to the neck, the Bradford hearing was told.

Investigating officer Detective Superintendent Sukhbir Singh, of West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, told Coroner Roger Whittaker that emergency services were called, on the evening of February 18, to a stabbing incident in Rookes Avenue, Wibsey, Bradford, and found Jack with the occupants of the address and his father Timothy.

He said Jack had walked the short distance from his home in Richardson Avenue – where he lived with his parents, brother Daniel and another sister – to Rachel’s house in Rookes Avenue.

Rachel saw Daniel arrive with a knife and a piece of wood. He made his way in through the back door.

Det Supt Singh said she tried to disarm Daniel and suffered a deep wound to the palm of her hand. Rachel saw Daniel remove a knife from a block.

He said: “Next thing, she sees Jack clutching his stomach and bleeding.”

He said Rachel fled through the front door with her daughter and raised the alarm.

Det Supt Singh said Jack’s father attended and found his son lying on the ground.

He said Daniel Taylor, 20, was arrested that night and later charged with the murder of Jack and wounding Rachel with intent. He had been remanded in custody since.

Coroner’s officer Anthony Thornton told the hearing that Jack, the youngest of four children, had been found on the living room floor with multiple stab wounds to the neck and abdomen.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics but there were no signs of life and he was pronounced dead on arrival at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Mr Whittaker said he was content that post-mortem examinations for both the prosecution and defence had been concluded and there was no need for him to retain the body for further examination. He released the body for funeral purposes. Jack will be cremated.

Mr Whittaker adjourned the inquest pending the outcome of criminal proceedings.

Daniel Taylor is expected to take pleas on the charges when he appears at Bradford Crown Court in June. A provisional date for trial has been set for September.
