Flamboyant TV interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen was in the district yesterday to judge a national photography competition.

He visited Salts Mill in Saltaire for the Picture of Motherhood competition, organised by Bradford-based Hallmark Cards.

The competition was run by the company as part of its Cards for a Cure breast cancer campaign for Mother’s Day.

Photographers were challenged to capture an image that represents motherhood today. The two categories, for ages 17 and under and 18 and over, attracted hundreds of entries.

The two winning images, from 12 finalists, will now be featured on Hallmark cards that can be bought online from hallmark.co.uk.

The winners, Alice Curtis and her beach scene, and Jenny Downing with her image of a mother protecting her child from midday sun in India, also picked up £1,000 of photography equipment. The judges were so impressed by the other shortlisted entries they are now looking at using three more of them on cards.

All of the 12 finalists’ images will stay on display at Salts Mill from tomorrow until Sunday, for the public to see for free.

Mr Llewelyn-Bowen, best known for the BBC’s Changing Rooms, said: “The standard was extremely high and what amazed me was how inspirational the sentiment can be. There were some really unusual takes on what Mother’s Day is all about.”

Hallmark’s Cards for a Cure campaign, now in its fourth year, gives £250,000 a year to Breast Cancer Campaign and Action Breast Cancer.

Mr Llewelyn-Bowen said of Saltaire: “It’s an extraordinary place.

“There’s a tremendous Victorian zeal leaving your mark on the landscape as Titus did.

“What a mark, what a landscape Titus rocks!”
