Bingley golfers were fundraising on the fairway yesterday in memory of a former lady captain who died last year, aged 47.

Clare Lyness, who was also a police officer for the Bingley Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team, was a member of the Bingley St Ives Golf Club for around ten years, and was lady captain in 2007.

After being diagnosed with cancer around Christmas, 2008, she died in September.

Current lady captain Sharon Bayton said: “Clare was much loved by all members of the golf club.

“We want to remember her by doing the thing that she loved doing – playing golf and chatting in the club with friends.”

She added: “She was a friend of mine, I knew her quite well. She was lovely, really friendly – she was a ‘live for the moment’ person and was very sporty.

“She was committed to the things she loved .”

The golf club is raising funds this year for soldiers’ charity Help for Heroes, and Sibs, which supports brothers and sisters of disabled children and adults.

Money raised at the tournament, and by a raffle, will be split between the club’s charities and Manorlands Hospice, Oxenhope, which cared for Mrs Lyness before she died.

The lady captain added: “Manorlands has sadly supported a number of ladies at the club who have died of cancer. It is a friend of the club and it is very sad – more so because Clare was so young.”

Mrs Lyness joined the Bingley Rural NPT as a PC in 2005.

After her appointment she was praised by her boss Sergeant Esther Hobbs, who said she was “worth her weight in gold”.

Yesterday’s event was a 4BBB, or Four Ball Better Ball, tournament with men’s and women’s competitions.

In memory of Mrs Lyness, all female players were asked to dress in pink.

New members are welcome at the club. Anyone who wants to join is asked to phone (0113) 2195928 for more details.
