A man has appeared in court today charged with the attempted murder of a 76-year-old woman.
Multalib Shaikh, of St Andrew’s Villas, Listerhills, Bradford, made his first appearance at Bradford Magistrates’ Court.
The 24-year-old is also charged with carrying an offensive weapon – a metal bar – without lawful authority.
Shaikh, who has short black hair and was wearing a blue and grey striped jumper and jeans, was led into a secure dock at the court by two security officers.
He stared impassively around the courtroom and spoke at the start of the ten-minute hearing only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.
The court was told Maniben Patel was left with serious injuries after she was attacked as she walked near Radwell Drive, close to Manchester Road, Bradford, at 10.30am on Sunday.
Shaikh’s solicitor Adress Younis made no application for bail.
Shaikh was remanded in custody to appear at Bradford Crown Court at a date to be fixed.
Police disclosed yesterday that Mrs Patel had been left blinded in one eye.
She remained in a stable condition today at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
