Am I missing something? The features editor asked me to write a piece about wines for romantics this week.
Do you think he means I should recommend wines for New Romantics, like the members of pop bands Spandau Ballet and Visage?
For the life of me, I can’t think why suddenly, in early February, such a request has been made.
But fortunately my wine notes do contain a number of entries that would be perfect to share with a lover. I have marked each, for some reason that I do not recall, with the heading February 14. Perhaps you dear reader are more savvy than I and can think of a good reason to select one of the following, to share with someone special next weekend.
I’m usually impressed with Jacob’s Creek sparkling wines and there is a new addition to the portfolio available at Sainsbury’s, Jacob’s Creek Blanc de Blancs.
If a sparkling wine is labelled blanc de blancs, you can be fairly sure, as is the case with this wine, that it is made from chardonnay.
This Aussie contender is a tad sweeter than most Champagnes and you’ll find it perfect as an aperitif. It has quite a fine fizz, with citrus fruit flavours and a hint of freshly baked bread.
Rosé, according to recent figures, accounts for a record high 11 percent of all supermarket and off licence wine sales.
There’s a whole raft of very quaffable pinks to go at these days, from sweet Californian plonk to the most delicate, bone dry Provencal wines. I’ve picked a chunky, crunchy, full flavoured, New World rosé from Argentina, Pascual Toso Malbec Rosé 2008.
This is a veritable fruit bomb of a wine, with strawberry scents and lots of spicy, plum, cherry and blackberry flavour. It will cope with all manner of foodstuffs from a fillet of salmon, to a spicy chicken curry but slips down easily on its own too.
If game is on the menu next Sunday, then pick pinot noir as an accompaniment. There’s a really good and relatively inexpensive one at Majestic, Costero Pinot Noir 2009, from Chile’s Leyda Valley. Velvety smooth, ripe and sweetly spiced, it has layers of black cherry and strawberry fruit with some smoky notes and a long finish. Snap some up, it delivers great value for money, especially if you make the most of the buy two discount.
Oh, and does anyone know what date Valentine’s day is on?
Jacob’s Creek Blanc de Blancs, £9.99 at Sainsbury’s 17/20.
Pascual Toso Malbec Rosé 2008, £7.95 at Field and Fawcett 18/20.
Costero Pinot Noir 2009, £6.99 each, when buying two at Majestic 18/20.
