Fantastic Mr Fox (Cert PG, 87 mins, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertain-ment). Featuring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Eric Anderson, Hugo Guinness, Michael Gambon, Brian Cox, Bill Murray *** Created painstakingly through stop-motion animation, Fantastic Mr Fox is a visual triumph, let down by a screenplay that doesn’t know to which audience it is trying to appeal. The articulated characters have plenty of personality, and there are some neat flourishes. The climactic escape is mind-boggling, leading to a cute gag reminiscent of Wallace and Gromit. Hip indie director Wes Anderson imprints his personality so indelibly on the script that it’s hard to see children enjoying the film. The simplicity and sweetness of the original story is almost entirely lost.

Triangle (Cert 15, 95 mins, Icon Home Entertain-ment). Starring Melissa George, Joshua McIvor, Michael Dorman, Liam Hemsworth *** Single mother Jess (George) yearns for a break from the tears of her autistic son, Tommy (McIvor). So one Saturday morning, while the boy is at special needs school, she agrees to a day trip on a yacht called Triangle with potential beau Greg (Dorman) and some pals. With almost no warning, the boat is caught in the eye of a massive electrical storm. Triangle capsizes, stranding the friends at sea... until a 1930s ocean liner, the SS Aeolus, emerges from the mist. The pals climb on board, glad to be rescued from the briny, only to fall foul of a masked figure. Triangle is an intentionally ambiguous yarn guaranteed to have viewers scratching their head. George is dragged through the emotional wringer, delivering a performance that makes sense once the film’s elaborate overall design becomes clear.

Doctor Who Space Museum/The Chase (Cert PG, 250 mins, BBC DVD) **** Three-disc box set starring William Hartnell as the Doctor in two gripping stories about a mysterious device that allows the characters to visit a chosen moment in time. In The Space Museum, the TARDIS arrives on the planet Xeros where the timelord and his companions find a museum with their likenesses on display. The team becomes embroiled in the power struggle between the Moroks and the subservient Xerons. In The Chase, the four time travellers use the Time/Space Visualiser to glimpse key moments in history but the Daleks are on hand again to spoil the trip.

Miss March (Fully Exposed Edition) (Cert 15, 86 mins, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertain-ment). Starring Zach Cregger, Trevor Moore, Raquel Alessi * Puerile and mind-numbing coming-of-age comedy that proves true love can endure even the lamest of scripts. Whether viewers will survive this torture is another matter.
