Ice on a country road played a part in a two-car collision that led to a dramatic rescue operation.

Two people suffered multiple injuries in the collision in Bayton Lane, Yeadon, and had to be cut free from the wreckage by firemen.

Plummeting overnight temperatures created a covering of ice on the road, which is near Leeds-Bradford Airport.

A white Mercedes C230 and a blue Vauxhall Zafira were both believed to have been travelling in the direction of Horsforth when they were in collision. Emergency services were called out just before 6am on Saturday.

Firefighters had to use hydraulic cutting gear to remove the roof of the Mercedes and release the driver, aged 43, and his male passenger, aged 64.

Paramedics led the rescue and helped firefighters first remove the driver, who suffered multiple injuries, and then the passenger who was even more seriously hurt.

Both casualties were taken to Leeds General Infirmary. The Vauxhall driver had managed to free himself and was said to be "walking about".

A fire service spokesman said: "We were led by the paramedics. We were there for about an hour and had to make the area safe before we could start to get the injured out. In these instances, it's the paramedics who tell us how fast we need to get people freed."

Police sealed off the road as rescuers worked and the lane was still closed further into the day for accident investigators. Police said icy conditions had been a factor in the collision.

Despite a sharp frost and some patches of ice, no other major accidents were reported across the district.
