Building work on a vast distribution warehouse in Bradford is progressing to schedule, it was revealed today.

Retail giant Marks & Spencer is due to take possession of the structure, bounded by the M606 motorway and Rooley Lane, this spring.

Prologis, the world’s biggest developer of distribution warehouses, started work on the 90-acre site in early 2009.

The site, which was once home to West Bowling Golf Club, was considered to be an ideal logistics hub due to its close proximity to the motorway network.

Today, a spokesman for M&S said: “It’s all still on track for the spring hand-over.”

The spokesman said it was likely the new distribution centre would be handed over in mid-April.

M&S said the building would be its largest distribution centre, serving all its UK stores.

Councillor Adrian Naylor, Bradford Council’s executive member for regeneration, said: “It gives great encouragement to see that the project is on schedule and is about to deliver jobs to Bradford.

“This scheme will play a key part in Bradford’s regeneration and I’m sure that, once M&S start operating from the site, we will see real benefits for Bradfordians in terms of jobs and training.

“It also has the potential to attract other companies to locate nearby as part of a logistics hub.”

When it was first announced in 2007, the project was expected to lead to 2,500 jobs at the M&S centre, as well as an extra 500 to 1,000 jobs across the remainder of the site.
