Hundreds of people across the Bradford district wore red today to raise vital funds to fight heart disease.

Staff at Bradford Royal Infirmary, Bradford College and Keelham Hall Farm Shop in Thornton were among those taking part in fundraising events to mark Wear Red Day.

It marked the end of National Heart Month, the British Heart Foundation’s annual campaign to increase awareness of heart and circulatory disease, and to raise funds for its research, prevention and care services.

Staff at the cardiac ward, ward 22, at Bradford Royal Infirmary held a wear red day and also got patients involved in quizzes, promoting BHF’s Beat code (Be active, Eat healthy, Avoid smoking and Take the Lifestyle quiz).

Consultant cardiologist Dr Steven Lindsay said: “Heart disease is the UK’s biggest killer and in Bradford we have a higher prevalence of the condition than our neighbours.

“By supporting the BHF’s Red for Heart campaign I hope we can raise the profile of heart disease and the important work the BHF do by raising money to fund education, patient support and research both nationally and locally.”

The day also saw 31 year-one pupils from St Cuthbert and The First Martyrs’ Catholic Primary School in Heaton, Bradford, visiting Keelham Hall Farm Shop.

The five and six-year-old pupils are involved in a healthy eating project, with an emphasis on local produce.
