The son of an elderly woman who faces spending her life’s saving on her future care has accused Bradford council of discrimination.

David Archer, of Braithwaite, Keighley, who must find a care home for his mother Rose, 88, says City Hall is penalising ‘self-funders’ like her.

He is calling on them to adopt a buy-in option for people who have to pay their own care fees.

The 54-year-old questions why care home residents cost the council £399 a week, yet self-funders can pay £500 or more for the same services.

He said: “I would like to see all political parties across our district get Bradford Council to make a social care policy that gives self-funders a buy-in option of social service support and protection at the cost of £399 per week for basic care.

Mrs Archer recently had a new knee fitted and can no longer look after herself.

He said: “Social Services have given me a brochure on Care Homes and have told me that they will have no further input and that from the point of discharge we are on our own.’’ Councillor Dale Smith, Bradford Council’s executive member for social care, said: “With regard to the specific individual issues I take them most seriously and they are being investigated.

“I can confirm that we have been working with the family and will continue to do so until the care needs of the person concerned are resolved. In relation to the broader issues of the support to self-funders of adult social care, it is the policy of the Council to provide information and support and we are currently looking at how we can further improve this.’’
