Skipton Building Society is to merge with a smaller rival to create an organisation with assets of £15 billion.

The society, which saw profits rise by £63.5m last year, is linking up with the Buckinghamshire-based Chesham Building Society, which has 21,000 members.

The Chesham already uses an IT platform provided by one of Skipton’s subsidiaries.

The merger will create an organisation with 92 branches. If approved, the move should be completed by June.

The Bradford-based Yorkshire Building Society is on course to complete its merger with the Chelsea after members of both organisations voted the move through.
