A supermarket is about to become a tourist attraction for vintage car enthusiasts.

Organisers of this year’s Jowett Rally, in May, are to tell the story of the Yorkshire car’s success.

And Morrisons supermarket at Five Lane Ends, Idle, will feature as it is on the spot where brothers William and Benjamin Jowett ran their production line until the 1950s.

Jowett fans will also be bussed round other locations, including the brothers’ home in Manningham and the site at Howden Clough where they opened a spare parts service after the factory closed. Visitors to the final day of the rally, at Canon Hall, Cawthorne, will be able to catch one of four buses completing the sightseeing tour.

Noel Stokoe, from the Jowett Car Club, said: “It’s the first time we’ve done this and just thought it would be a great way of telling the Jowett story.”

The 2010 rally is expected to be the largest gathering of Jowetts ever, with more than 150 involved. This includes two from the first batch of 12 cars made at Five Lane Ends.

The factory was sold in 1953, but the 1923 Jowett owner social club was still thriving and is now the oldest one-make car club in the world.

This year’s rally starts at the Cedar Court Hotel, Wakefield, on Friday, May 28. Enthusiasts from Australia and America are expected to attend.
