Do you want to be in stitches, but not the surgical kind? Then this could be the perfect solution – a show which has both audiences and critics in stitches. Spike Milligan’s celebrated war memoirs – Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall – has taken to the road once more and now this gloriously absurd and exuberant hit comedy is coming to The Alhambra from Monday to Saturday.
It’s been around the world, and now Sing-a-long The Sound Of Music is coming back to St George’s Hall, Bradford. You can join in and dress up for the occasion (there’s a fancy dress competition for the best outfits), and if there is anyone out there who doesn’t know the words, there will be handy subtitles. So dig out your lederhosen for an evening you won’t forget in a hurry. Sing-a-long The Sound Of Music is at St George’s Hall next Saturday, but you’ll have to hurry if you want a ticket, as it will be a fast seller.
There’s a series of fun, hands-on workshops about the mystery and beauty of gold-leaf gilding led by conservation specialist Pam Keeton at Cliffe Castle, Keighley, starting on Tuesday from 10am to 3pm. The first session will give an opportunity to gather inspiration from the magnificent surroundings of Cliffe Castle and to look at the gilding work around the building. There will also be an introductory talk from Dale Keeton, the social history collections officer of Bradford Museums and Galleries, and a particular insight into the restoration of one of the building’s most important interiors, the Great Drawing Room and the journey of the silk from India.
Learn how to deal with the stresses of modern-day living at a drop-in meditation club, starting on Tuesday for five weeks. Entitled Stop Anger, Start Living, the classes start at 7.30pm at The Swadford Centre, Sun Street, Skipton, and cost £5. Spirit, Dewsbury’s free outdoor show returns this year with a stunning street performance by Spanish company Sarruga, who will wow audiences with their giant mechanical dragons. Not for the faint-hearted, the dragons will rampage through the town centre, breathing fire and entertaining everyone as they battle for supremacy of the streets. The show starts next Friday in Dewsbury town centre at 7pm, lasting around an hour.
Do you know the two rather dim-witted policemen from Last Of The Summer Wine, who were usually to be found snoozing in their patrol car? Now there’s a stage show based on PCs Cooper and Walsh called An Arresting Night. It’s a unique, improvisational show, where no one night can ever be the same as the ideas for the sketches are derived from the audience. If you’re in Bradford, then the Ecclesiastical Embroidery Exhibition at Bradford Cathedral is well worth a visit. It’s a celebration of the skill of the ecclesiastical embroiderers who have designed and sewed a wide range of vestments and hangings used in churches throughout the Diocese. The exhibition runs until March 6.
Tomorrow is your last chance to Go Wild! at RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate. With plenty of family-friendly wildlife in the garden events, it’s a great day out for all the family, with practical workshops children can take part in, and lots of ideas to take home. Highlights include children’s workshops on how to make a bumble bee hotel and a mini beast mansion. Workshops run from 9.30am to 4pm. Tickets are adults £7, children £2.50.
