Sugababes (pictured) – Sweet 7 (Island) *** It is sometimes hard to believe that the Sugababes have claimed more Top Ten singles than the Spice Girls, yet listening to their latest album, it really isn’t that surprising. Sweet 7, like all their albums, adopts a slightly different attitude to the previous release, this time featuring a more Americanised style, largely due to contributions from Sean Kingston, Ne-Yo and Beyonce’s writer Makeba. Beginning with the rambunctious Get Sexy, the album just about manages to stay consistent with both style and quality. Sweet 7 is also the first album to feature newcomer Jade Ewan – it won’t be the last.

Cobra Starship – Hot Mess (Atlantic) **** With the demise of Fall Out Boy, it looks like Cobra Starship could be the new band on the block to give the kids what they want. This isn’t dance, R&B, rock or emo, yet it is a strange combination of all four styles. Cobra Starship do remind me very much of Fall Out Boy so it comes as no surprise that they have a song called Pete Wentz Is The Only Reason We’re Famous, and also FOB’s Patrick Stump sings on one of the tracks. Whatever Cobra Starship lack in originality, they make up for with a sense of humour. Hot Mess isn’t a life-changing album, but it is a fun-filled, no-thrills CD that will at least put a smile on your face.
