This rarely-seen altar cloth, embroidered by First World War soldiers suffering from shell shock, is on display in Bradford Cathedral.

It is one of 25 religious robes and altar cloths from around the diocese on exhibition until March 6.

The altar cloth was made by the Bradford Khaki Handicrafts Club, established to provide nerve-shattered soldiers with therapy.

It was used at services at the Abram Peel Hospital, then in Leeds Road, where soldiers with neurological problems were treated. Sandra Howard, of the Cathedral, said: “It doesn’t fit any of our altar tables and the colours in the design do not follow any of the liturgical colours – purple, red and green.”
