Hair and make-up artist Adele Firth is cutting it in the world of TV drama.

Adele, of Bingley, cut Dame Judi Dench’s hair on period drama Cranford, created 1970s hair-dos for Life on Mars and styled the cast of new ITV romantic comedy, Married, Single, Other. She has also worked on new Kay Mellor drama A Passionate Woman, starring Billie Piper and Sue Johnston, partly filmed in Bradford.

Adele, 30, a former Bingley Grammar School pupil, worked in hairdressing salons in Bradford then did a media make-up course and a project with film agency Screen Yorkshire, run in partnership with Skillset and Yorkshire Forward, offering work placements for young people in the arts.

Adele’s first placement was on TV drama Faith, set against the backdrop of the 1980s miners’ strike, then she worked on See No Evil, about the Moors Murderers. More recently she did the hair and make-up for Married, Single, Other, exploring the lives and loves of three couples, starting on February 22. It was filmed mostly in Leeds, with The Royle Family actor Ralf Little and Lucy Davis, who played Dawn in The Office.

“The cast were so friendly,” said Adele. “The make-up designer had a set idea of how each character should look. We put hair extensions on Ralf Little and Miranda Raison, who plays his love interest. She has short hair but in the show she has long blonde hair.”

Adele works on a freelance basis. “The Kay Mellor drama, A Passionate Woman, is set in the 1950s and 80s so I researched the styles of those periods,” she said. “I’m assigned to particular actors, which is essential for continuity. I worked with Frances Barber, who wore a wig, and (Bradford actress) Rachel Leskovac.”
