A Good Samaritan was beaten over the head with a wheelbrace when he went to help a woman in distress, a Court heard.

Parvaiz Makin needed 15 stitches after Stuart Penney attacked him late at night near Bradford city centre.

Penney, 25, of Enfield Drive, Wibsey, Bradford, was today jailed for three years four months for wounding Mr Makin with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm.

Bradford Crown Court heard he had drunk alcohol and taken steroids when he set about Mr Makin for interfering in a row between him and his girlfriend. The men fought in Little Horton Lane on February 26 last year before Penney seized the wrench from his car. Mr Makin, 39, was knocked down and repeatedly struck on the head, prosecutor Dave MacKay said.

He was treated in Bradford Royal Infirmary for wounds. He lost a tooth, suffered headaches and had to take two weeks off work. The court heard that Penney regretted his actions.

Judge Peter Benson said Mr Makin was fortunate not to suffer severe brain damage. He had gallantly intervened when he saw Penney’s girlfriend in distress.

After a scuffle, Penney fetched the wrench and struck him forcefully several times over the head.

Penney was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, to run concurrently, and banned from driving for two years for dangerous driving.

He admitted going up to 100mph on the wrong side of the road during a police pursuit from Manchester Road, Bradford, towards Pudsey, on December 20, 2008.

The court heard that a police car had to accelerate to 120mph not to lose him.
