The family of an 18-year-old student killed in a high-speed motorway crash shed tears as a commemorative plaque was dedicated to him.
They stood alongside police and civic dignitaries at a ceremony at Tong High School, Westgate Hill, Bradford, to remember Tanveer Ali, a former pupil who died in the M62 crash.
Tong High School head teacher Lyn O’Reilly and Tanveer’s father, Niaz Ali, paid tribute to the promising student and dedicated the plaque and a commemorative tree to him.
Mr Ali said he had been touched by the generosity of staff at Tong High School and those who were at the dedication to remember his son.
Tanveer, known to his friends as Tanny, was killed when a Volkswagen Golf being driven by his best friend Faad Hussain smashed into a lorry.
Hussain was racing another friend, Hamza Ahmed, who was driving a Toyota Corolla at speeds of nearly 130mph. Hussain and Ahmed were later sent to young offender institutions for six years each following the accident in March 2008.
