Police chiefs will be asked to approve a 2.5 per cent hike in the cash they receive from Bradford Council taxpayers to meet a planned £438.6 million spending target.

Members of the West Yorkshire Police Authority are due to approve the budget for 2010/11 at a meeting next Friday.

If members agree to the proposed rise, it will mean council taxpayers in band D properties forking out £130.50, an increase of £3.18 a year or 6p per week.

Councillors on the police authority will be asked to approve proposals to save £10 million, which will include reducing West Yorkshire Police staff from more than 10,000 to 9,993.

However, police authority chairman, Councillor Mark Burns-Williamson, said the staff reductions would not come from front-line officers.

He said: “There has been some comment elsewhere about the force not recruiting this year but that is incorrect. We will still be recruiting new police officers throughout the year.”

Savings will also be made by modernising the workforce, cutting the money paid to private consultants and reducing police staffing and running costs.

The £438.6 million spending target is an increase of more than three per cent on the current year, which has seen householders in council tax band D properties paying £127.32.
