A woman and a five year old boy were trapped upstairs in their home while their front door was on fire in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters said a man in the house at Town Lane, Thackley, managed to put the fire out using kettles of water before crews arrived.

Watch manager Paul Metheringham, of Idle Fire Station, said they suspected the fire had been started deliberately.

He said crews were called to the house just after midnight. They forced entry into the house and two firefighters went upstairs to lead the woman, believed to be in her early 20s, and the young child to safety.

He said: "The fire was out on arrival.

"One male adult who was in the property had managed to put it out from inside using kettles of water.

"The fire hadn’t spread from the door, but because of the fumes, the female and the young child were treated for inhaling smoke on the scene by fire crews and then they were taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary for a check up.

"They didn’t come down because the smoke was too much for them to get downstairs."

He added that no smoke alarms had been fitted in the house, but crews were due to fit alarms when it was suitable.
